There’s fun and treats to be had for both kids and adults this Halloween season in Dutchtown! Here’s a rundown of activities in the neighborhood. If you’ve got any leads on events, please let us know and we’ll update our list.

The Forgotten

The Forgotten by Leverage Dance Theater.

Leverage Dance Theater returns to Intersect Arts Center with a second run of their immersive dance performance The Forgotten. Ten performances are scheduled beginning Thursday, October 24th. A kid-friendly version will be staged on Saturday, November 2nd; otherwise prepare for a scare! Visit the Facebook event page for performance times and to purchase tickets.

The Haunted Pool

Encore Theater Group‘s performance of the new musical The Haunted Pool continues at Thomas Dunn Learning Center with performances on October 25th, 26th, and 27th and November 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Prior to the November 1st performance, come by for an art reception featuring works inspired by The Haunted Pool.

DiverseCity Church Trunk-or-Treat

DiverseCity Church at Itaska and Compton hosts a trunk-or-treat on Saturday, October 26th from 2pm to 4pm. Bring the kids for a fun, safe time with lots of candy, a costume contest, a bounce house, and more.

Spookapalooza is back this year on Saturday, October 26th from 3pm to 1am. Your ticket gets you into multiple venues along Cherokee to see dozens of performers. Get dressed up and enter the costume contest for your chance to win prizes. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $25 for VIP including food, beverages, and a karaoke party. Get tickets here.

Howl-O-Ween

The Cherokee Dog Park invites all dogs and their people to the annual Howl-O-Ween party on Saturday, October 26th from 2pm to 4pm. Please familiarize yourself with the dog park rules before attending.

Benton Park West Trunk-or-Treat

The Benton Park West Neighborhood Association hosts their annual Trunk-or-Treat on Sunday, October 27th in the Salvation Army parking lot at 2720 Arsenal. The festivities start at 4pm and continue until the candy runs out.

Trick-or-Treat on Cherokee Street

The 7th annual Trick-or-Treat on Cherokee Street starts at 5pm on Halloween night at Love Bank Park. Grab a candy bag at the park and stroll from shop to shop along Cherokee. Plus there will be a bonfire, photo booth, and DJ at Love Bank Park.

Trunk-or-Treat at St. Anthony’s

St. Anthony's Trunk or TreatSt. Anthony of Padua hosts their annual Trunk-or-Treat on Halloween night from 6pm to 7:30pm. Last year over 800 kids attended! Children 13 and under (accompanied by an adult) get a hot dog, drink, and tons of candy.

Yaqui Horror Picture Show

Yaqui’s on Cherokee hosts an outdoor showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween night. Come in costume and come to party! The party starts at 5pm and the movie plays at 10pm.

Tricks and Treats Party at Crusoe’s

The Original Crusoe’s hosts a Tricks and Treats Party on Saturday, November 2nd from 3pm to 6pm. Activities for kids include face painting, witch hat toss, and eight-legged crafts. Plus kids eat free!

Common Sound Festival returns to Marquette Park for a third year on Saturday, October 5th! The festival, produced by Dutchtown South Community Corporation, brings neighbors together with dance, music, food, and lots of fun.

This year’s featured musical performer is St. Boogie Brass Band, playing two sets of New Orleans-style funk and soul at 2pm and 3:45pm. DJ Prospect and DJ Smitty will be spinning tunes throughout the rest of the day.

Check out dance performances by Leverage Dance Theater, MoSTLy Tap, and Spirit of Angela West African Dance and Drum. Or learn some moves of your own with dance workshops including breakdancing and capoeira.

Enjoy food from Mount Pleasant’s own Sol Azteca, Heavenly Sinful Delights, Indian Sunshine Cuisine, and the Juice Bar Truck. 4 Hands beer, soda, and water will also be available for sale.

Several vendors will be selling jewelry, art, crafts, and more. And a number of local organizations will be on hand to provide resources and educate neighbors about their programs.

Come get down with hundreds of your neighbors on Compton Avenue this Saturday, October 5th, from 1pm to 6pm. Everyone is welcome!

MetroBus Service Changes Coming to Dutchtown

As part of Metro Transit‘s Metro Reimagined program, big changes are coming to bus service throughout the neighborhood. Higher frequency service and route changes are coming to Dutchtown beginning September 30th.

The #8 Bates-Morganford will be replaced by the new #8 Shaw-Cherokee. The new line, running from the Central West End to the Catalan Bus Loop, will run down Cherokee between Grand and Jefferson, then south along Jefferson and Broadway. The Shaw-Cherokee bus will run every 30 minutes during weekdays and every hour evenings and weekends.

The #11 Chippewa bus will begin offering high-frequency service. During the daytime, buses will come every 15 minutes. 30-minute service will be offered early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.

The #70 Grand bus, St. Louis’ busiest bus line, will increase service to every 10 minutes during peak times during the week. 15-minute service will be available on the weekends, and 20-minute service will be offered late evenings.

The #73 Carondelet bus will no longer serve Cherokee Street or South Grand, but it will begin to offer high-frequency service. The route has been adjusted to be more direct, going down South Broadway to Meramec to Virginia through the neighborhood. The #73 will run every 15 minutes during weekdays and 30 minutes on evenings and weekends.

Other bus routes throughout St. Louis are also changing things up as part of Metro Reimagined. Visit the Metro Reimagined website for info on changes across the system.

Neighborhood Meetings

The Gravois Park Neighborhood Association meets Tuesday, September 10th, 6pm, at the Rita Ford Community Center, 3353 California, just north of Cherokee.

The Dutchtown West Neighborhood Association holds their next meeting on Wednesday, September 11th, 7pm. They meet at in the banquet hall at Grbic Restaurant, 4071 Keokuk at Meramec.

The St. Cecilia Historic District Neighborhood Association‘s next monthly meeting is Tuesday, September 17th, 6:30pm. Enter St. Cecilia School on the 5400 block of Alaska.

The Cherokee Street Community Improvement District holds their next public meeting on Thursday, September 19th, 5:30pm at Artist Art.

The Marine Villa Neighborhood Association meets Monday, September 23rd at 7pm at Irish Corner Pub on the corner of Cherokee and Lemp.

The Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Association has their next meeting on Wednesday, September 25th, 7pm at the Gretchen Inn next door to the Feasting Fox.

Dutchtown CID Meetings

The Dutchtown Community Improvement District holds public Board of Directors meetings on the fourth Thursday of every month. Additionally, its three committees meet quarterly. Find out more about the Dutchtown CID and its committees in our recent post.

The Beautification and Maintenance Committee meets Thursday, September 5th, 5:30pm, at the office of Anthony Duncan, architect, located in the old Stork Inn at 4527 Virginia.

The Marketing and Development Committee meets Thursday, September 12th, 6pm, at Patrick McKeane’s Pub at Original Crusoe’s.

The Safety and Security Committee meets Thursday, September 19th, 5:30pm, at the Original Crusoe’s.

The CID Board of Directors meets Thursday, September 26th, 5:30pm, at Urban Eats Café.

Intersect Arts Center

Fall classes at Intersect Arts Center in Gravois Park will be starting soon. Registration is open now. Here are a few of the offerings beginning in September.

Ceramic Handbuilding Sculpture: Explore the ceramic form and gain a strong foundation in practical skills, technical knowledge, and contemporary ceramic practices. Classes are Saturdays, 1pm–3pm, beginning September 14th.

Ceramics with Justin Leszcz: Learn a variety of wheel throwing and glazing techniques. Classes are Saturdays, 9am–11am, beginning September 14th.

Off the Frame: Weaving By Hand: Learn weaving and fiber basics in this three session course. At the end of the course, participants will have completed their own woven wall hanging. Classes are Saturdays, 9am–noon, beginning September 21st.

The art gallery at Intersect will also be opening a new exhibition, Anew, presenting the duality experienced every day between the reality of violence in the community and the ways we collectively address and support one another. Anew opens on Saturday, September 7th, during the CommUNITY Arts Festival (read more below) and continues through October 4th. The gallery is open weekdays from 9am to 6pm.

Thomas Dunn Learning Center

Thomas Dunn Learning Center‘s Art Lab is open Monday through Thursday from 3pm to 6pm. Work on your own piece or participate in the focus of the day. Art supplies are available along with tons of items to reuse and repurpose.

The South Side Youth Council meets every Monday at 4pm at Thomas Dunn. The South Side Youth Council aims to contribute to the South Side community by creating and organizing youth led programs and events.

The next Sip ‘n Sketch is Wednesday, September 11th at 6:30pm. Adults of all skill levels are invited to participate in this life drawing class exploring a variety of materials and techniques. Bring a snack and a beverage. Register by calling 314-282-9314.

FreeSource‘s Tech Support Cafe returns to Thomas Dunn on Thursday, September 19th from 6pm to 8pm. Participants can receive free technical assistance and peer mentorship from volunteer IT professionals in a welcoming, friendly, accessible workshop atmosphere.

More Dutchtown Events

The 2019 CommUNITY Arts Festival takes place at Intersect Arts Center on Saturday, September 7th starting at 11am. This event features visual art, multiple performances, educational and art workshops, resources, and a screening of the documentary Sweetest Land. The CommUNITY Arts Festival celebrate arts programs making a positive impact in St. Louis and works to educate the community on public health issues contributing to the city’s violence issues and connect them with programs and resources. Perennial kicks of their fundraising season with Pies for Perennial on Thursday, September 12th. Enjoy local brews and crafting projects and help pick the best pie in St. Louis to be featured at October’s Lost + F(o)und fundraiser.

Earthbound Beer hosts Bliss, a pop-up brunch, on Sunday, September 15th at the brewery. Chef Nico is an up-and-coming talent in the St. Louis food scene. Don’t miss this chance to try out his outstanding food. Visit the Facebook event page for a glimpse of the menu.

DT2 and the South City Sipsters are teaming up for the next After Hours happy hour. Join them at Original Crusoe’s on Wednesday, September 18th starting at 5:30pm. Enjoy a wide selection of beers, great food, and the company of your neighbors.

The Dutchtown South Community Corporation‘s Community Empowerment Committee meets on Wednesday, September 25th. Residents have the opportunity to help implement DSCC’s programs in the community. The meeting is at 6pm at Thomas Dunn Learning Center. Dinner and childcare are provided.
